Kauai Air Tours

FAQs

As a couple can we go at the same time?

“YES”We have 2 aircraft in our fleet…each of you will fly in your own aircraft, with your instructor…but…be in the air together at the same time…what an experience to look over and see you significant other with a big grin on their face.

What is it? A powered hang glider, microlight, trike, ultralight, or weight shift controlled aircraft?

Well there is an official (FAA) definition, stated in terms of weight, fuel and passenger capacity, license requirements, etc., but it wouldn’t interest you.

Putting the answer in terms of what Big Sky Kauai flies is commonly known around the world as a “trike” or “microlight”.

What About Safety?

Big Sky Kauai has a 100% safety record on both the mainland and the Hawaiian Islands, with no injuries or accidents ever recorded.  We utilize the latest in all safety equipment and fly a “June-2009” Australian Airborne Trike with a backup ballistic/rocket parachute system.  “WE ARE THE ONLY POWERED HANG GLIDING COMPANY ON KAUAI THAT HAS THIS SAFETY RECORD”

What if the engine quits?

Engine failures are very rare, but remember this aircraft was designed as a gliding aircraft which flies and lands extremely well without any power. When conditions warrant we will glide in and land with the engine turned off.

Where do we find you?

Big Sky Kauai is located on the west side of the island, near Hanapepe Town just off Highway 50 (turn south on HI-543) to Port Allen Airfield. Our address is 3666 Kuiloko Rd., Hanapepe, HI  96716. Get directions from Google Maps.

How should I dress?

Dress for your normal Kauai day, Big Sky Kauai will provide you a flight suit and gloves, but bring along a sweatshirt/jacket and closed toe shoes for flying….and beach wear for frolicking at Salt Pond Beach Park (1/4 mile away) while your significant other is flying.

What about the weather?

Port Allen Airport is located on the “sunny side” of Kauai, so on most days it is flyable even when it is raining nearly everywhere else. However we do request that you call for a “weather check” before you leave for the airfield. If inclement weather causes your flight to be cancelled, we will do our best to reschedule you. You will never be charged for a cancellation due to weather.

I’m not interested in a lesson, just a tour. Do you do that? No, every flight is instructional.  We find that everyone enjoys learning about the aircraft, its characteristics and of course flying “IT” makes you feel like…superman…err..woman…

Big Sky Kauai’s goal is not to make you a pilot, but rather have you experience this incredible form of flight over some of the most awesome topography in the world.

Why are you so different than a helicopter tour?

Although helicopters do offer a great tour, this unique “trike” flying experience offers a completely different adventure….a “HANDS ON” affair

  • Trikes-Offer unrestricted views of the island.
  • Go where the best flying conditions are.
  • Provide you the attention of one-on-one instruction.
